Gerhard Girkinger, Oneworld’s Head of Customer Experience provided insights about this much-anticipated initiative. According to Girkinger, the alliance is currently finalising the program’s launch details. Girkinger emphasised technology integration among member airlines is a critical aspect of this rollout and that the program will initially start on a smaller scale, gradually expanding its scope.

Significant Impact with Wide-Reaching Effect

The introduction of this program is expected to have a significant impact, especially if it includes major players like British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, and Qatar Airways using the Avios currency, along with American Airlines and Cathay Pacific. This would ensure a wide-reaching effect even in its early stages.

One notable example of the program’s potential benefits is the ability to use Qantas Points for upgrades on flights like Qatar Airways. However, Girkinger clarified that there are no plans to create a unified Oneworld currency like ‘Oneworld Miles’ or ‘Oneworld Points.’ Instead, the alliance will provide the necessary framework, while each airline will determine its own exchange rates for upgrades, similar to current practices for redemption.

The integration of different frequent flyer programs and the determination of eligible fare types for upgrades present complex challenges. Policies vary among airlines, with some offering instant upgrade confirmations and others requiring waitlisting. Additionally, there’s the issue of balancing available reward seats between an airline’s own customers and those from other airlines in the alliance.

Another aspect under consideration is the eligibility criteria for fare types for alliance-based upgrades. For instance, Star Alliance, a competitor network, requires bookings in a full-fare flexible economy for business class upgrades. Qantas has previously explored options like setting a minimum points threshold for upgrades, focusing on standard and flexible economy fares.

More Thrilling Developments in the Pipeline

The pandemic has impacted the pace of development of this program, which is part of Oneworld’s broader initiative, including the opening of a second branded lounge. As Oneworld approaches its 25th anniversary, Girkinger hints at more exciting developments in the pipeline, suggesting that the alliance’s upgrade program could surpass those offered by other alliances.

Star Alliance has 2 status levels.

Silver – Silver is acquired through flying 10,000-35,000 miles in a year or about 25-35 segments. The benefits of silver is Priority Reservations waitlist which means you will be given higher priority to book a flight if someone cancels. If you would like to take an earlier flight your Silver status grants you higher priority.

Gold – Gold status usually requires you to fly more than double the miles and segments of silver.  The Benefits of Silver include those of Silver as well as Airport Lounge access to over 1,000 lounges worldwide regardless of class of service. Gold members are allowed to bring one guest into the lounge who is also departing that day. Extra Baggage allowance of up to 20kg or an additional piece of luggage. Always check with your carrier. Priority Airport Check-in through the Priority counters which normally have shorter lines. Priority Boarding with first and business class passengers. Priority baggage handling with your baggage arriving first.

Redeeming, Earning and using frequent flyer points in Star Alliance

Star Alliance does not offer its own program. Each alliance member has its own frequent flyer program with its own rules. When you join any of the alliance members frequent flyer program you can then earn and redeem miles on all qualifying flights. It’s very important to remember to enter your membership number when booking flights.

You cannot transfer points from one member’s frequent flyer program to another airlines program or combine points from one airline’s program with another.

You are allowed to redeem your points earned in one program for travel awards on any of the Star Alliance partner airlines.

You can transfer points to a family member but fees may apply and you can use points to upgrade to the next class of service on many of Alliance member airlines. This can be requested when you book your flight.

Oneworld frequent flyer has 3 standardised tiers.

Oneworld Ruby Privileges – This is the Silver tier and offers a few time-saving benefits like access to business class priority check-in counters, improved seat selection choices and priority when on flight waitlists.

Oneworld Sapphire Privileges – This is the Gold level tier for frequent flyers. It offers the same as Ruby Privileges plus access to airport lounges as well as most Oneworld airline business class lounges before your flight. It also gives priority boarding and luggage handling and depending on the airline baggage allowances are boosted.

Oneworld Emerald Privileges – Oneworld Emerald is the card to hold if you are a true high flyer! It offers privileges normally reserved for first class even if you are flying in economy. You will have access to first-class check-in counters and first-class lounges. Your luggage will get priority treatment while you can use the ‘Fast Lane’ through select airports. Baggage allowances are increased by 20kg or by one additional bag. You will get the plum pick of seats before online check-in opens.

It is important to know that Oneworld status is awarded automatically when you reach the equivalent status tier with your main airline. An example of this is when you reach a Platinum membership with Qantas then you will also be given an Emerald frequent flyer with Oneworld for the duration of your Platinum membership. This means when you fly with Qantas and its other partners you will enjoy many of the same key benefits with all other Oneworld member airlines in any class of travel.

Redeeming, Earning and using frequent flyer points in Oneworld

There is no global Oneworld rewards program. You earn frequent flyer points and status credits with your preferred airline program. This is the same when using points.

Most of the time it’s not possible to use the points you earn in one frequent flyer program to upgrade on a different airline. Some airlines have worked together to make this possible and Oneworld may expand its alliance in the future. When you earn frequent flyer points in an Oneworld member airline-owned program you can use the points to book reward flights on any Oneworld airline in any available class. For example, the points you earn with Qantas in Australia you can use to book flights on other Oneworld member affiliate airlines.

Oneworld Connect – this is a relatively new membership system. It’s for smaller airlines to become attached to Oneworld in a limited capacity. It offers select benefits to all Oneworld frequent flyers. Candidates must be sponsored by Oneworld full member airlines. At the moment, Fiji Airways is the only Oneworld Connect member and is sponsored by American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific and Qantas.
