American Express has announced upcoming adjustments to its Membership Rewards program, including changes to airline transfer partners and updated redemption rates. These updates are designed to maintain value and flexibility for Card Members and will take effect from 15 December 2025.

One key change is that Thai Royal Orchid Plus will be removed as a transfer partner from the effective date.

In addition, several airline partners will see updated transfer rates.

From 15 December 2025, Membership Rewards points will convert at the following rates:

American Express also confirmed that the rate at which Card Members earn Membership Rewards points will stay the same, and that points will continue to have no expiry as long as the account remains in good standing.

Where Should You Transfer Your Amex Points?
It depends on where you’re travelling next — destinations, airlines, and even cabin class matter.

If you’re unsure what to do, try one of two options:

If you have travel plans for the next 12 months:

  1. Plan your trips for the next year.
  2. Search for available award flights that suit your dates and preferred airlines.
  3. Check which program the award seats belong to:
    • If the award seats are with programs not affected by the upcoming Amex transfer changes, there’s no need to rush.
    • If the award seats are with programs whose transfer rates will increase, transfer your Amex points to those programs as soon as possible, and definitely before 14 December 2025.

or Share your travel plan with us and we’ll help you find the best reward flights:
https://pointsadvisor.com/find-me-award-flights-now/
Then you can confidently transfer your points to the right program to secure those flights.

If you don’t have any trips planned yet:

Use these guidelines to protect the value of your points:

  1. If you travel to Thailand often or fly Thai Airways:
Transfer your points to Thai Airways before it is removed as a transfer partner.
  2. If Emirates is your preferred airline, and they generally have good award availability:
Consider transferring points to Emirates Skywards.
  3. If you travel to Hong Kong or Asia frequently:
Cathay Pacific Asia Miles offers good availability to HKG and across Asia at reasonable rates.
  4. If you travel to Europe regularly:
Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar generally offer solid award availability for long-haul Europe travel.
  5. If you need points for internal Europe flights:
Virgin Atlantic points can be useful for Virgin Atlantic, and for SkyTeam partners like KLM and Air France.
  6. If you have a large points balance:
You can diversify and transfer across multiple programs to maintain flexibility.

or Get a Points Health Check with us:
We’ll review how you earn and use points today, show you ways to accelerate your points balance, and help you decide where to transfer points in the future – based on your travel habits, likely destinations, and airline preferences.

General tips

Even if transfer rates stay the same for certain partners, if you find good award seats that work for your travel plans, use your points whenever you can, rather than holding them for too long. Airlines can still increase the points required for flights.

Partnerships/Programs With No Rate Change

  • Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Velocity Frequent Flyer
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Air New Zealand Airpoints
  • Hilton Honors (hotel program)
  • Marriott Bonvoy / SPG

For Qantas and Velocity, while the transfer rate stays the same, the cost (i.e. number of points required for reward flights) may still rise — so “same transfer rate” does not guarantee same value.

Frequently Asked Questions About Amex Points Transfers & December 2025 Changes

Q: What changes are coming to Amex Membership Rewards airline partners in December 2025?
A: Amex is adjusting partner availability and some transfer rates, effective 15 December 2025. This may affect which airlines you can transfer points to and how many points you’ll receive after the transfer. It’s important to review these changes before moving your points.

Q: Will the December 2025 Amex changes affect how many points I need for flights?
A: Yes. After the transfer rates shift, you will need more points to secure the same award seat through a partner airline. The redemption value you receive can also change depending on your destination and preferred airline.

Q: Should I transfer my Amex points before the December changes take effect?
A: Only transfer points once you’ve confirmed award seat availability. Transferring early “just in case” can leave you locked into a program that may not fit your future travel plans.

Q: What is the best place to transfer Amex points in Australia?
A: It depends entirely on your future travel destinations and preferred airlines. For example:

  • Emirates has high award availability but taxes are very high
  • KrisFlyer is excellent for Singapore Airlines premium cabins
  • Velocity partners with Qatar and Singapore Airlines for international flights

If you’re unsure, submit your plan here:
https://pointsadvisor.com/find-me-award-flights-now/

Q: How do I know which airline gives the best value for my Amex points?
A: The value depends on distance, cabin class, taxes, fees and award availability. Premium cabins (Business/First) usually deliver the highest cents-per-point value. Our team can calculate the best value for your trip via a Points Health Check:
https://pointsadvisor.com/points-health-check/

Q: What’s the risk of transferring Amex points without a travel plan?
A: Once Amex points are transferred to an airline or hotel program, they can’t be moved back. You also lose flexibility if partner availability changes.

Q: How long do Amex points transfers take?
A: Transfer times vary by partner — some are instant, others take hours or even a few days. This delay can sometimes cause you to miss out on available award seats if you transfer too late.

Q: Can I still get good value from Amex points after the December changes?
A: Yes, Amex points still hold value, but why let their value drop significantly if you can transfer before the changes take effect? If you’re unsure where to transfer, speak to the PointsAdvisors first to make sure you keep the maximum value from your points.

Starting August 5, 2025, travellers using Qantas Points will face significant changes. The airline is introducing a broad increase in the number of Qantas Points required for Classic Reward seats and upgrades, impacting everything from short domestic flights to luxurious around-the-world trips.

Qantas Points Icon

Qantas Points: More Required Across the Board

Qantas has announced a sweeping change in its frequent flyer program that will see a 10-20% increase in Qantas Points needed for redemptions and upgrades. This marks only the second such hike since 2004, and the first since 2019. According to Qantas Loyalty CEO Andrew Glance, these changes are designed to keep the program sustainable while continuing to expand seat availability for Classic and Classic Plus Rewards.

These changes will affect all frequent flyers, no matter the cabin class—from economy to first class.

Lock In Lower Qantas Points Rates Before August

If you’re planning to use your Qantas Points for a trip, your best strategy is to book early. Classic Reward seats can be secured up to 11 months in advance, meaning you can still lock in lower rates for travel as far ahead as June 2026—provided you book before August 5, 2025.

Important Dates for Qantas Points Changes 2025

Earn More Qantas Points on Paid Flights

There’s a silver lining for frequent flyers: from July 2025, Qantas is also increasing the number of Qantas Points earned on paid flights. Domestic flights will earn up to 25% more points, and the ‘status bonus’ cap for premium cabins—previously limited to Flexible Economy rates—will be abolished. This change allows bonus points to be earned on the full base fare, with Qantas estimating an additional 4 billion points entering circulation annually.

Key Increases in Qantas Points Redemptions

Economy Flight Redemptions

Expect to pay approximately 10-15% more Qantas Points for Classic Flight Reward seats in economy class. While most international routes in premium cabins will see a 20% increase, shorter flights up to 2,400 miles will rise by just 5%.

Upgrades

If you typically use Qantas Points for upgrades, prepare for higher costs:

  • Domestic upgrades from economy to business will increase by:
    • 15% for short routes (under 1,200 miles like Sydney-Melbourne or Brisbane-Melbourne)
    • 20% for longer routes (e.g., transcontinental flights)
  • International upgrades will see
    • A 10% increase for flights under 3,600 miles (e.g., Perth-Singapore)
    • A 20% hike for longer international routes

In addition, the cash surcharge for Classic Reward seats—termed ‘carrier charges’—will rise. For example, a business class Classic Reward seat from Sydney to London will now require an additional $648, up from $473, a 35% increase.

Around-the-World Flights with Qantas Points

Map of the world

The highly sought-after Oneworld Classic Flight Reward for around-the-world travel is also becoming more expensive. This redemption, which includes up to 15 flights and five stopovers across 35,000 miles, will increase significantly:

  • Premium Economy: 249,600 → 287,000 Qantas Points
  • Business Class: 318,000 → 365,800 Qantas Points
  • First Class: 455,000 → 523,200 Qantas Points

If you’ve been saving your points for this golden opportunity, now’s the time to act before the increase takes effect.

Changes for Partner Airline Redemptions

Qantas Points needed for flights with partner airlines are also on the rise. Emirates premium cabins will now require 5-10% more points, though economy class rates may slightly decrease for longer flights.

Redemptions with other partner airlines—including Oneworld members, China Airlines, and starting October 2025, Hawaiian Airlines—will also increase by approximately 15-20%, aligning with Qantas’ new internal rates.

Jetstar Offers Relief with Lower Qantas Points

Not all the news is bad. In a rare exception, Jetstar is lowering the Qantas Points cost for many domestic routes. For flights under 600 miles—making up nearly half of Jetstar’s domestic offerings—Classic Reward seats will drop from 6,400 to 5,700 Qantas Points.

Popular routes benefiting from this decrease include:

  • Sydney to Melbourne
  • Sydney to Brisbane
  • Sydney to Gold Coast
  • Melbourne to Adelaide
  • Melbourne to Tasmania

Summing up

With Qantas Points set to undergo their most significant value adjustment in years, now is the time to act if you’re planning a trip. Lock in your Classic Reward redemptions or upgrades before August 5, 2025, to avoid the higher rates. On the bright side, enhanced earning opportunities and cheaper Jetstar redemptions offer some balance to these changes.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has announced it will be leaving the Star Alliance network, effective from 1 September 2024. This decision will affect frequent flyers who have relied on SAS as part of their Star Alliance benefits, particularly members of loyalty programs like Flying Returns.

Key Changes for Flying Returns Members

For members of the Flying Returns program, several changes will take place:

  • Earning and Redeeming Points: Flying Returns members can earn or redeem Reward Points on SAS-operated flights only until 31 August 2024. After this date, Flying Returns Points will no longer be eligible for earning or redemption on SAS or its partner flights.
  • Tier Status Benefits: Post 31 August 2024, tier status benefits will not be recognised on SAS-operated flights, affecting members who have previously enjoyed perks such as priority boarding and lounge access.
  • Claiming Missed Points: Members who have flown with SAS before the deadline of 31 August 2024 will still be able to claim any missed points, but they must do so by 31 October 2024.

New Opportunities with SAS’s Own Loyalty Program

While SAS is exiting Star Alliance, the airline will continue to offer its own loyalty program. From 1 September 2024, passengers flying with SAS or its partners will be able to earn rewards under the SAS Loyalty Programme, subject to the terms and conditions of this new program. Details on the program are yet to be fully disclosed, offering a fresh opportunity for frequent SAS travelers.

What to Do If You’ve Already Booked Flights

If you have already booked a flight with SAS using Flying Returns Reward Points before 31 August 2024, your booking will still be honoured, and you can proceed with your travel plans. However, any changes to flight dates after this period will not be accommodated. It is advisable to finalise your travel arrangements accordingly to avoid any inconvenience.

Need Assistance?

For any further questions or assistance, we recommend contacting the customer support teams of your loyalty programs or Scandinavian Airlines directly. They can provide detailed information and support during this transition period.

As SAS makes this significant shift, frequent flyers and loyalty program members should stay updated and plan their travels to maximise their benefits.

Qantas Frequent Flyers are set to enjoy unprecedented access to over 20 million additional reward seats with the introduction of Classic Plus Flight Rewards.

This initiative marks one of the most significant expansions in the 35-year history of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program, significantly enhancing travel accessibility to popular destinations such as London, Tokyo, New York, and Singapore using Qantas Points, even during peak periods.

While Classic Plus reward seats typically necessitate more points than the existing Classic reward seats, they offer exceptional value within the frequent flyer program, boasting substantially broader availability. Moreover, Classic Plus reward seats are eligible for upgrades.

The points required to secure Classic Plus reward seats will fluctuate akin to regular airfares, meaning they will be lower during off-peak periods or when booked in advance, and higher during peak periods. Furthermore, during sales and promotions, Classic Plus reward seats may even fall below the points required for a Classic reward seat on the same route.

Effective immediately, Classic Plus reward seats can be reserved on Qantas international flights departing from Australia for travel commencing from 1 July 2024, exclusively through qantas.com. Subsequently, this offering will be extended across the remainder of the airline’s international and domestic network on Qantas-operated flights by year-end.

Upon full implementation across the international and domestic network by the end of calendar year 2024, Classic Plus will grant members access to 20 million new reward seats within the rolling 12-month booking window, ensuring a consistent level of availability moving forward.

Vanessa Hudson, CEO of the Qantas Group, emphasised that frequent flyers now have more avenues than ever to accumulate points, with the introduction of this new flight reward option enhancing the value proposition for those looking to leverage their expanding points balances for travel purposes.

Andrew Glance, CEO of Qantas Loyalty, highlighted the significance of the widespread availability of Classic Plus, offering members greater flexibility in flight options across all cabin classes and destinations within the Qantas network.

In addition to the introduction of Classic Plus, Qantas remains committed to offering over 5 million existing Classic reward seats across Qantas, Jetstar, and its 45 partner airlines, maintaining consistent points requirements since 2019.

The airline’s commitment to enhancing the frequent flyer program includes a $60 million investment this financial year, with recent initiatives such as the addition of 6,000 new premium Classic reward seats to Europe during peak travel periods.
